After Covid-19 Nebraska Innovation Studio had to figure out how to safely re-open without impacting our member’s ability to work. One of the most successful things we changed in a post pandemic world was our general work tables.
I led the charge on specifying toolboxes and equipment for each worktable. After receiving the donated equipment from Snap-On I designed a layout and laser cut Kaizen foam for 12 toolboxes. These toolboxes are step 1 in getting tools in the hands of our members.
At home a small shop is basically a given. Trying to fit equipment into half a garage or an adapted basement living room is sometimes the best you get. I made a custom workbench that could handle my drill press and give me room for handtools and larger toolboxes. I hate jumping into a large project without modeling it first so I started with Pro/Engineer and then took those plans into the shop.
Workshops are useless without a semblance of organization. Too little and you can’t find anything, too much and makers spend all their time putting things away. Sometimes this means custom cut kaizen foam inserts, sometimes it means custom built work benches.
